We're on the trail we're feeling good Sun's shining he says hey do you guys Smell Smoke we feel like these warm Thermal gusts of wind coming in our Direction that looks like a forest fire These guys look like some Vehicles oh Yeah We need the loops [Applause] Rain catched it See how they did Come around Let's say we're two days into our hike We started out the second day a third Day whatever it is and we're on the Trail we're feeling good Sun's shining Like it is right now the weather is Perfect it's it's as good as you could Possibly ask for things are fantastic And we've been hiking along and Daniel Here being The Savvy you know guy that He is and he's aware of his surroundings At all times and he's great companion to Have on the trail he says hey do you Guys smell smoke And I'm like yeah yeah I thought I Thought it was just in my head but yeah I smell some smoke too and he's like ah Whatever but I just can't fire or Something like that and we keep hiking All right another hour or so goes by and We look up at the sky and we're like That's like a brownish grayish tinge to The sky and we're like
Right like no big deal like it's not a Big deal we're just gonna keep going we Got we got two more days to hike we got A long ways to go let's just keep Trucking so we put our heads down and we Keep going we're having a great time Weather's still great And then it starts to we start to see Smoke in the trees and we're like huh Well that's probably not good maybe Still just a controlled burn the fire Department's got under control we're Fine we're totally fine we keep going And then and then we feel like these Warm thermal gusts of wind coming in our Direction and we're like And it starts to get really Smoky like It starts to get really Smoky and we can See this orange tinge in the distance Like let's say this is our Trail like Over that other that over that other Ridge we see this orange glow and we're Like oh crap like well that's bad so we Stop and we collect ourselves because That's what you're supposed to do you Think about your your situation and you You weigh out all your options and Figure out what you're supposed to do And we think Well that looks bad like we probably Shouldn't continue on because that looks Like a forest fire all signs are saying Forest fire the wind's blowing at us we Don't have a whole lot of time to react
To this situation we probably should Head back the way that we came that Would be the smartest thing to do right Probably probably but in theory I mean That yeah logically like what does his Head back you know we got a long ways to Go it's further than what we need to Finish but the smart thing to do is not Go into the forest fire So we're on this Ridge right here and We're like okay we're gonna head back This way and as we walk down the ridge We start to see that orange tinge coming Around this other side of the of the Ridge and we're like well shoot that's The way we just came from and it's Really Smoky over there and the wind is Blowing in this direction right at us And there's fire that way there's fire That way on our Trail On both ends of the trail and we have to Make a decision of like well shoot like This is happening pretty quick the Wind's blowing right at us we're going To be in a lot of trouble and you can See Flames now it's coming at us So we all decide all right let's just Head down the hill let's just head down This hill as fast as we can we got to Get away from this thing maybe there's Water down there some sort of safety Maybe we could run into a fire crew I Don't know what's going to happen let's Go
Fantastic Uh I wasn't gonna bring that up until Now but Get your mind in the place where you got What you got we might need to have some Resources so just start thinking about Things that might be useful for uh a Possible campout It's coming We ran down this hill as fast as we Possibly could to escape the flames Um and we got to the bottom of the hill And we ran into a swamp right We've ran Into the swamp There's a river on the other side Whatever there's a lot of water there's A lot of water and the only way to Escape the Flames is to get through the Water as quickly as we possibly can Let's pretend it's a fast-flowing river And you ditched your pack right you Gotta there's flames right there it's Coming wind's blowing at you you're Gonna get burnt up Smoke's coming drop Your pack you've got to swim across this Fast flowing river and if you do it with A backpack on it's going to be rough to Say the least yes there's ways to do it But in this scenario we dropped the pack You got what you got on you To be with you [Applause] The baptism Foreign
[Music] [Laughter] [Applause] Jungle boots he's got this looks like Some Vietnam oh yeah nice drink that's All I wear man yeah a whole Hillside you See Flames just covering it and we've Gotten on this side where we feel like We're at least a little bit safe unless It jumps the river but it's a big river Right you know from here to there Big River so it's probably not based on how Wet I am it's pretty big it's a big River yeah yeah it's fairly soaked yeah So that whole Hillside is on fire it's Real Smoky over here we're gonna do the Best we can to deal with that but but Let's say we're safe over here let's say It was going to get down to like maybe 40 degrees like maybe high 30s maybe Less it was going to be chilly tonight Yeah it was going to be really cold Tonight what are our priorities I'm not In this whole all day today all 24 hours I'm not gonna ever tell you what to do I'm gonna give you I'm gonna I'm gonna Give you some problems and you guys are Gonna try to come up with Solutions and I'm going to help obviously but but it's Not going to be like here do this do This like this now you guys go do it Just like I did none of that so Um so what do we want to do now so put Put yourself in that picture we're gonna
Try to maybe make Camp here until Tomorrow hopefully the fires died down Maybe search and rescue maybe the fire Department's there or whatever Um we're gonna make camp We're soaking wet it's going to get cold What do we do first of all is anybody Sick hurt or injured sick hurt or Injured I'm glad you brought that up Everyone is injured Um Ray if you are right-handed raise Your right hand Put that put that in your pocket Put that in your pocket I'm left-handed So my left hand is going in my pocket For the foreseeable future until I say Otherwise that's where that hand stays It is injured you cannot use it you Might be able to use your arm a little Right you may have to tuck something Underneath here that might be okay but Your hand is shot you fell down crossing The river in How would I do that I'm stuck we'll sit down we go through And see what we've got we make a plan Right and in this situation we kind of Have we know sort of what we got we've Inventoried out what we have we have a Trash bag each we've got our knives We've got a Ferro Rod we've got a very Short piece of cordage 10 feet a Paracord some of you have water some of You don't and with flashlight that's
Right uh with batteries and internet oh Do we need to build a shelter do we need To make a fire what do you guys want to Do Loses slow as you can let them start and Drying while we're doing the other stuff We can multitask you can hang your stuff Out in the sunshine dry out hey if That's what you want to do do it yep Taking a shirt off with only one hand is Hard too If it's not too cold outside just Wearing it'll dry faster Just moving around your body heat and Stuff like what I'm wearing will Probably dry pretty quick Fairly quickly Maybe not you You look fantastic I think that's all that really matters That's all that matters if we get down To it 90 of it's looking like you know What you're doing yeah select a spot to Camp out and then we'll figure out what To do from there We need to loot yeah And it's real easy to get undone oh That's cool and then you have the rest Of this We've got our fireplace for the evening Thank you For a good time good amount of time Because yours I'm not sure about yet We got some boilage happening there
[Applause] And let it cool nice work dude Excellent is it boiling All right just keep our fire going for a Little bit I gotta say that's a new one On me though having too wet it's a bit To be in a creek and then to have to wet Down your kindling and dunk it yeah it's Pretty bomb ass exercise yeah I don't Know if I showed that uh actually in the Video so yeah so we had to build the Fire in the creek obviously but before We did that everything that we used to Start the fire with the exception of the Tinder Tinder was dry but the kindling We all had to dunk for five seconds yeah That made it fun right Sweetest fire torque that's cool yeah The one side burned out so now I'm Having to hold it but that's super cool So you just jams your sticker Tinder Drove it down into the sand with the Knot with uh another piece of wood cram My tantling candling in it and that's Cool one side gave I should have got a Big big side burnt up too fast yeah yeah Instead of running around Gathering Rocks I figured I'd try that that's cool That's a super cool idea man I didn't Even that didn't cross my mind let's see And you're using some scavenged wire That you found on the right side yep [Applause] Make sure that one side is shorter than
