Foreign [Music] Hey guys welcome back I am Jason salyer And we recently put out a poll and we've Received over 5 000 votes if you could Pick one tool to Aid your survival in an Unknown location at the unknown time of Year what would it be we gave five Choices a machete a special forces Shovel a saw a small Hatchet and an ax Of some sort or a fixed blade knife and 42 percent the vast majority of people Chose a fixed blade knife such as this One and I thought it'd be really fun for This scenario to do it kind of on the Outskirts of civilization most people Live either in cities in suburbs or near Civilization of some sort and the Chances of you getting into a survival Situation in a really desolate remote Area or slim unless you visit them on a Regular basis so I thought it'd be cool To kind of scavenge a little bit we've Been pushed out of an urban area Suburban area but from the massive riots Crowds of crazy people whatever it is And now we've got to figure out how to Make ends meet with very little Equipment full disclosure this is my Property right I'm not trying to trick Anybody I'm not in some unknown location Some unknown area that I'm unfamiliar With so I am cheating a little bit but But for the sake of filming and making
Things a little bit easier without Having to trespass on people's property Uh that's what we're going to do but I Think you guys will get the idea the Food fire water and shelter I think we can make all that happen Here's my water source Now I know because I live here that There's a creek over there a nice clean There's my chickens we could maybe kill One of those and eat it For this video but but I know there's a Creek up there fast flowing clean Creek But I'm gonna pretend I'm gonna pretend that that's not there And I have found a scummy water source Which is you know maybe potentially more Likely what you're going to come across So this Is my water source right here So we're gonna have to figure out a way To make that work for us so that's That's a big Priority First Day priority Right there is finding water regardless Of where you are I don't think it's Going to rain so if we look up We can make a judgment call and we can Decide if we think the weather is coming In and we can decide how big of a Priority some sort of actual shelter is To keep us protected from the rain Precipitation snow whatever it may be Um or we we could rely upon maybe fire To keep us warm because tonight it's
Going to be in the 40s because I don't Think it's going to rain And I think I can scavenge some Materials pretty quickly to get myself If it should rain to get me get me out Of that I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to try to focus on getting a Fire going we need to find some sort of Tinder now this is a fantastic Tinder Growing on this Vine right here attached To this tree Kidding of course this is poison ivy Don't try to harvest that for Tinder now Guys let's not get all been out of shape About the scenario right the scenario is Whatever I make it I'm breaking up these Rules as I go so don't get all bent out Of shape and start saying things like Well actually in that scenario it'd be You know counterproductive to blah blah Blah whatever you know the scenario is What I'm making it as I go so let's not Get too worked up about it if you start Here's a here's a tip if you start a Comment with actually I'm not even going To read it so don't if it says actually The first word or even the first Sentence I will not read the rest of it Just so you're just so you're aware I Think my best bet for getting the fire Going with no tools other than my knife Is going to be a friction fire And I'm going to try to go for a bow Drill fire so I just need to find a dead
Standing white pine Guys if you haven't already hit that Thumbs up please do I'd be really Grateful if you just take a second to Click that thumbs up and and if you want To if you got the time Leave a comment tell me what you think About survival challenges like this if You enjoy watching them Uh if you want to see more like it if You want to see me use all of the tools That were suggested the saw the shovel The uh machete If you want to see a different scenario Using each of those tools I think that'd Be kind of cool Let me know in the comments if you'd Like to uh See me suffer a bit alright so here is An area of White Pines super easy to Find really easy to identify tree The needles will almost always come in a Cluster of five like this It's got branches that come out all the Way around the tree and then it's got a Section with no branches and then it's Got another whirl And then no branches until the next World no branches and repeat and so Forth and so on The inner bark is edible And it is about the best thing that I Know of for a friction fire Oh my goodness
This cat man I'm a long ways from home I tell you this bush my bush cat follows Me everywhere I go I'm way up here she Just Seems to always find me A crazy cat It's a ghost balloon And on the outskirts of civilizations You're gonna find all kinds of garbage Some useful some not useful In this case I'm gonna take that balloon Maybe I can do something with it this One looks Promising I think we could probably get what we Need Out of this Section right here between the two Worlds One of the more difficult parts of a bow Drill set to find is going to be your Bearing block the handhold part Something with a concavity like this That will hold the top of your spindle And keep it from flopping out can be Really challenging to find This log here will make a nice bench to Sit on maybe I can use it too as part of My shelter cordage is going to be one of The things that's really difficult to Fabricate in the wild yes you can make Cordage out of different inner barks of Trees and things like that I've seen it Done with willow bark
I've had marginal success with tulip Poplar bark it's really difficult to Make it strong enough to get the job Done I think my best bet for cordage is going To be clothing so let's just Get to it I think I'm going to try to Use this here this is I'm going to use This part of my t-shirt right here where It's already doubled and stitched I'm Going to try to cut that off When I look for a bow I look for Something that's not too big and heavy That's going to be cumbersome to use and I like something that's already got a Little bit of a bend in it just like That Just cut our limbs off I also like to leave a little fork in The end like that it makes it easier to Attach your cordage to [Music] Actually my baton here That I've been using looks kind of Promising I think it's too popular Looks like tulip poplar might work All that's left to do is find some Tinder This is tulip poplar a little bit past Its prime But it'll still it still looks like it's Going to get the job done You can never have too much tender I Don't think there's such a thing
Feels fine hairs that's what I want I Want to get it broken down even smaller Than that if possible I'm gonna set it Up here in the sunshine Let it dry out even further give me my Best chance Here's my Tinder ready to go Drying out in the wind and the Sun And once that's on fire I'll throw these this ball of shavings On there which should ignite really Really easy then I'll put my tinies Martinis my in-betweenies and then my Bigs My hands are filthy from Or at least they look filthy they've Been washed plenty of times from working On my truck and my wife's car You know when it rains it pours the Transmission went out of my truck and Then the starter went out of my wife's Vehicle like the next day which was Extremely convenient So so we were down to no vehicles for a Little while I got that got my wife's Car fixed at least her car's fixed but My truck's still in the shop so Um anyway my dirty hands I got accused One time of purposely getting my hands Dirty for the video so I could look Tougher I tried to explain to the guy I tried to Say I tried this I started out explaining
Saying you know sometimes men get their Hands dirty and you know your Dawn dish Soap doesn't just it doesn't just wash Off the dirt in one go you know Sometimes men get their hands so dirty That it doesn't just wash off that Easily and I started to explain that to Him but I figured it was a waste of a Waste of my breath because he most Likely wasn't going to get it Log is a little damp so I'm gonna try to Keep it keep my set off of here I'm Gonna use the knife as kind of a base And that might be what I collect my coal On as well So one problem I'm seeing This rock is rough And it's shaving down my spindle on the Top Which isn't a deal breaker but I may Have to look for something better On the outskirts of civilization there Is absolutely no reason why you Shouldn't use some sort of trash such as This If you take the bottom of your Notch and You carve out chamfer The Edge just a Little bit it kind of makes like a Volcano shape And then your coal your Ember that You're creating with the Dust Shade small little tiny shavings from The spinning friction process It creates a volcano type shape and
Makes it more stable and it's less Likely to fall over on you Something kind of like that Now just keep going as long as I can And I'll stop when I get too tired And we'll see if we've created a number So good color Started to turn black right there on our Coal See right there started to turn black But not quite enough So I'm going to rest And then make another go at it Every time I'm pretty sure I've got it And then It just stopped smoking on me It's a lot of work I think an important Thing to remember when in a situation Where this might be really important for You to get a fire Or build a shelter or whatever it is is That rushing through the process and Potentially screwing up or skipping Steps is not going to be helpful at all So slowing down a little bit thinking it Through make sure you're doing Everything possible It could go from you know a survival Situation to just basically An Inconvenient uncomfortable evening Basically You're not going to die most likely I Mean tonight's going to be in the 40s Well yeah that is cold and if the
Weather should turn bad and it should Start to rain or something and it's in The 40s that would be bad I could potentially get hypothermia Without some sort of good shelter in a Big fire kind of deal but but But it's still freaking out and Panicking is not going to help anyone Slow down Take all the necessary steps to Accomplish the goal fire shelter water Whatever it is and make sure you get it Right the first time That squeaking sound generally means You're not pushing down hard enough Pushing down hard on it but then the String starts to slip a little bit So just fine-tune adjustments like that Make a big difference It's nice having an emotional support Animal In a survival situation Burnt through our baseboard here our Hearthport Pretty much all the way through it Just maybe still smoking Another Useful tactic in a survival situation is Is getting rest when you can It's nice when you gotta got a friend to Snuggle with but Even if you didn't let's say you spent a Miserable cold night I couldn't get this Fire going let's say I gave up and
It just wasn't gonna happen Um I spent a miserable night Wide Awake Shivering all night long doing jumping Jacks and push-ups to stay warm Sun comes up next morning use that Sunshine to get a little rest You might need it for the next day For the next night that you spend Shivering again Nap time's over let's get back to work Foreign switched it around I switched Directions on my string I'm going to spin it the other direction Too In hopes that I could get a few more pulls out of it Okay we gotta try something different Here's a Pretty dry piece of Poplar Still smoking Ah it quit Might be a little bit too much moisture In my wood Ah Dad come We're gonna get it It's still smoking Come on Come on little limber Keep smoking oh oh my gosh I don't know how many Attempts that was But it was a lot
But this Ember As long as I don't screw this up He's still smoking Oh my gosh That had to be like 20. It felt like 50. But I'm gonna Pace myself here I'm not Gonna get in a rush So I'm gonna let that Qualificate Qualify a bit more Get solid Just praying my Tinder is dry enough by Now because I don't know if I've got Another ember in me What I usually try to do is I Tip my bird's nest sideways like that And then I'll dump My coal gently on it Without knocking it to pieces Like that I'll bring it over to where I'm going to Start my fire I got my littles ready Just gonna Park that right there for a Second got my ball Of Shavings ready to go More smoke is good Yes oh my gosh That was That was something All my really small shavings From The Carving process on the fire
First thing My teenies on there All my mediums here My in-betweenies as I call them for the Kids And then my split down stuff here my Split down Poplar I can throw on there As well I think my arm is going to be sore for From that I think you could see how big Of a struggle that was that was that was A lot that's one of the harder bow drill Fires I've ever done that took a lot of Attempts Anyway but we got fire off the landscape Today Using just Just our knife basically and my shirt Tail I suppose if you want to count that As a tool But we've got fire and that's mission One accomplished so now what I would do In this scenario is if I had time left In the day I could scavenge for some Materials to build myself uh some sort Of makeshift shelter out of whatever Trash I could find or build one out of Natural materials like you know just Like a debris shelter of some sort Either one would get the job done but For the sake of time we're going to stop This video at fire so uh Knife Only Survival fire is complete check that box
And we can move on to our other Um survival priorities such as shelter Water and then potentially some food we Shall see But anyway I really do appreciate you Guys watching make sure you hit that Thumbs up subscribe and if you haven't Done so already really really grateful For any comments that you might leave And I cannot wait to see you on the next One Foreign
