Army Special Ops Solider Shares Winter Survival Tips

[Music] Thank you [Applause] [Music] Foreign Your car goes down your snowmobile goes Down something breaks and you're stuck Well Well in your survival situation in my Situation that I'm replicating I'm on a Snowmobile All right here we have been just Blasting through some heavy powder which Is awesome So let's say the snowmobile dies right Now let's talk about this Always proper prior planning so Some cows up there running around Catching my eye squirrel moment On proper prior planning First off the number one thing that Kills people in the backcountry is Exposure okay they went hiking a storm Moved in and now they've got hiking Clothes and they're in a snowstorm So I'm gonna talk just for a second about The right kind of clothing to wear I'm Gonna talk just for a second about the Right kind of clothing to wear and They're going to get a little bit deeper Into some things that are Nice if you're smart enough to bring Them with you okay so basically what

I've got on is I have a cotton Um pullover sweater that's not the best Thing but it's pretty realistic it's What a lot of people will wear and this Is what I want to wear when I go out So I've also got a canvas anorak this is Just a wind stopper this is a shell this Is something that will ice can freeze on It and brush off something I can take Off it's kind of like wearing a tent Inside of my anorak I have wool layers I've actually got Two of them I have a big wool sweater Nice heavy wool sweater and then I've Got this Um It's a vest that I always wear when I do Survivor related items or Survivor Related Go in the backcountry of any kind right And the reason I wear it primarily is Because it's got two lighters and some Kindling in it and I always have my my Vest so I've always got my lighter no And also in this situation I've got some Wool pants on one cool thing about walls You see that they beat up They might get a little bit wet but then My body heat dries it out So I'm not against Gore-Tex I wear plenty Of Gore-Tex The problem is well years ago I was a Mountaineering guy in Alaska and we

Would wear Gore-Tex with polypropylene And then I'd either wear a wool or Polypropylene base layers and you can go About three days with that before you Stink now I realized that Um many years have passed and they have Synthetic materials that don't retain uh Sweat and stink in the way that a lot of The old stuff used to but they're still Not quite at the point where wool is Wool is something that you can wear While it's wet until it's dry if you're Working in it and clearly in the winter Time you don't want to sweat but if you Do sweat wool will take the wetness it Will transport it to the outer layer and Then you can draw you can brush it off Now if it's a wet heavy snow this is More of a powdery cold snow but if it's A wet heavy snow You do want to err on the side of Gore-Tex still have a wool mid layer With Gore-Tex Gators pants on outer Layers especially stuff you can take off Because that way you can kneel down sit In the snow and not get wet which is Kind of a kind of a positive the wool That I'm wearing right now is nice Because it's big and loose and heavy but If I get totally wet like I'm gonna have To physically work until I drive myself Out another positive about Wallace Effect that I can I can start a fire Right now and use the fire to dry it out

And Yeah technically you can dry off Polypropylene and plastic but one spark Hits that thing and you've got a little Molten donut in your clothes and it's a Whole and now it's no longer a Waterproof material so I say Wool primarily Gore-Tex on the top if You need to take the Gore-Tex off Because you can just shake it out and The water will come off of it the snow Come off of it and then use fire to to Dry yourself out Pretending here right because that's What we do in Internet land Like I'm stuck I'm in some pretty solid Snow Um I was smart and wore the right outer Layers so let's do what we would Normally do if I was in survival Situation Check what I've got in my pockets pull Everything out look at it and figure out What I can use to rectify my situation Well First things first whenever I go in the Back country I've got a radio or a phone Or something so These little leashes are awesome Squirrel moment again oh and and that's Wall on the inside of these things Keeping me warm so going through my bag I don't have anything in the front Pocket I got a Garmin mini so I can hit the SOS

Button I can send text messages it's not On right now because I don't need it and That keeps the batteries going and I did Actually grab it from my nightstand so I Know it's 100 plugged in because I leave It that way Um This Papa juice is a little bit of a Weird thing to have in a kit but in the Winter time especially if you've been Working for a few days your hands get Chewed up your lips and face gets shoot Up and any kind of string in this Papa Juice that I've got a candle so that's a That's a weird thing but something that I like I have a compass inside here not So much for where I live but when I go Places that are completely flat without Mountains or I can't see the trees it Becomes harder to tell where North is so Compass for the win and Actually my third lighter right I'm good at friction fire I enjoy Friction fire I I like Fair rods I like Flint and steel but lighters unless you Break them always work and a redundancy Of lighter so one here and two on my Vest on the inside is key because if I Really am in a uh a bad situation a Survival situation I'm kinda putting all Of my Hope on a big fire to one signal For me and two keep me warm maybe three Dry my clothes out after a duration of Time and

Out here there there are kindling Situations like right here you can see That tree has some Dead Leaves and you Can shake the snow off and kind of Gather those and then hopefully the Sticks that are attached to them are are Crunchy uh freeze-dried essentially Um this is it looks like a uh Cottonwood I've got scrub Oak over here Burns hot Once you get it going but it takes a While to get going a little uh Um that looks like a fur and I know up Above us we've got Pine so there's some Spruce and Willow and different things Around here so I've got things that I Can burn and as far as kindling is Concerned these trees the uh dead pine Needles are great now they kind of flash So they get it started they don't hold It so if I maybe got it started with the Pine needles and held it with some of These sticks I could keep it going while You can use what nature provides I hate To rely on it so having said that I have Some hell's fire so if you guys saw some Hills fire in the other uh video and I'll light this up show you how it works But let's continue to go through the kit The other thing that I have in the Backcountry Well let's be honest this is a food Getting machine right the other thing I've got is my glock okay Kind of getting snug right there

So Road Glock 9 mil Um this gives me the ability to defend Myself I don't know from what right You're you're way more likely to get in A self-defense situation in this city Than you're ever going to be in in the Country But also if I am in a self-defense Situation if I've got to Bear a cougar Or a cranky moose this can deal with it More importantly though this is a food Getting thing right I would probably be Better off with a little 22 pistol and a Brick of ammo than I would this Glock But it's what I grabbed and it's what I Have so whatever right so protection Food fire and I'm wearing my shelter and I need a way to dry that out now I do have a pocket knife in here I don't Want to dig out I've got my keys on my Wallet my phone that's in here which can Connect to the the Garmin mini and If you can call for help you're good now You just have to chill till they get There right so number one have batteries And have battery charged devices that Can call to get you out now even having Said that sometimes They can't come or they can't come until Tomorrow or maybe two days because maybe You're not the only one that they've got To deal with when a situation like that Happens you still need Fire Water

Shelter food Communications medical uh And the ability to replenish but in the Short term I don't need water I got Three days I can eat snow and yes it's Okay to eat snow I don't need food not For three weeks I'm gonna get cranky but I'm not gonna die so if I can chill for 72 hours assuming that it takes that Long with my communication device I'm Good and really the way to do that is to Start creating shelter start creating Fire and find a way to collect water Because you can eat snow but it becomes A pain in the butt a really smart way to Process snow especially when you're Skiing or hiking or something is put Snow inside of some sort of like a bag And put it on a string and stick it Between your your inner layer and your Outer layer so your body can heat it up And melt it but it doesn't actually make You cold the big complaint about people Eating snow is oh it might introduce Hypothermia if you're cold stop hitting Snow right if you're moving and you're Working to eat snow Problem solved right okay let's talk About what I've got on the vehicle that Can be Some Kind of Rescue related thing now I've watched Survivor Man And he turns all the vehicles apart I'm Not against that if you're really in a Survival situation I just don't see

People doing a lot of that so this right Here I've even met survivor man he's a Good dude this right here is just my Trunk And in my trunk I have a few things Do this one-handed In my trunk I got a shovel okay If you've ever Gotten in some stupid deep snow and Tried to dig your snowmobile out a Shovel is worth its weight in gold this Is a mountaineering shovel so it's got Actually a pole for Um Avalanche rescue on the inside of it Because it kind of doubles up this is Also a saw My saw just basically pinches right here Foreign Get that to pop out And then slides out like that and There's the saw blade and I just attach It back in there now this can be a Shelter creating device if I have Compressed I'm going to call it Styrofoam snow I can create blocks and a Minimum that's a wind blocker and go From negative 30 to I don't know 40 or 50 degrees which is still cold but Not bitter bitter cold it can also cut Through wood so I like this as a backup Because it can create shelters and it Can cut wood down however it's kind of a Pain in the butt to cut wood with such a

Small saw so this is more of a dedicated Shelter creation device and I also leave I hope he's watching Friend of mine gave me this I leave a Katana boy in here And let me open that up Katana boy is these big tall saws that You all see on alone It's a big silky So that guy right there folds up it can Take down a huge tree And why is it important we can take down A big tree because I gotta cut down one Tree when it's big I gotta cut down a Bunch of trees when it's little and I Can also use this to create shelter if We get down the road that far so Quick note these things to take your Fingers off ask me how I know so be Careful with them also if it's really Bitter cold don't touch the steel with Your with your bare skin right now it's Cold but not that cold so this guy right Here Gives me the ability to take down a big Tree right it's more compact Than a bow or a bow saw Um it's just really efficient it's more Efficient than a hatchet and just super Collapsible so it's really hard for me To Convince that there's a better option When it comes to Getting fuel to burn than something like

A saw like this There's also an extra blade inside of This uh this case here because you can Break them And I'm good at breaking stuff all the Time whether I want to or not So we'll put it in a stash if I wanted To [Music] So little recap Bring fire with you bring away to Produce a lot of fuel Um wear the right clothing have a Communications device That if you get in a situation go Through your kit so you can remember What you have you may be nervous and Forgetting oh hey I've got a extra Lighter here I've got uh whatever here So dig through your kit Bring your Communications devices and Reach out early if you think that you Might be heading towards a survival Situation At least contact somebody let them know Hey I think I can't get out of this Valley or I think I might have a problem And then that way they can initiate Their response because it's not like a Helicopter just comes and grabs everyone Really quick and then lastly self-rescue If you can if you brought the right kit You can get yourself out Um sometimes it you know there's medical

Related things you can't deal with but Just proper prior planning have a Contingency plan have enough clothing That you can sit comfortably by a fire At night time because oftentimes this is A Morse kohansky quote we're cold for Want of one more layer so just bring one More layer stuff it away somewhere the Reality is in the winter like this maybe One more layers all that I need to just Sit underneath that tree until tomorrow Morning and reassess what I need to do So all right guys hopefully that's Valuable to you This Snow's still coming down so I have Got to get out of the area and thank you For watching [Music] Best [Music]
