Foreign Drift bad walking a straight line good Yes it's a house in the swamp And it all worked out Foreign All right you can hear that rain coming Down we've got about a foot of water Beneath us and it's rising as we speak Um you haven't seen this cabin check her Out solo 10 day overnight building an Off-grid Cabin in the Woods or the swamp And that's exactly what we did and it's Off the ground about four foot so There's no worries there and the water's Flowing beneath us but the one thing I Haven't done yet is spend the night in This bad boy with water underneath us And that's exactly what we're gonna do So this is not the video that I wanted Was the video that you're going to get I Also brought the white board so we're Going to give some classes old school Style so let's get to it Foreign Okay so let's go ahead and talk about The two types of compasses real quick This is a soul overnight yes I'm staying Here again it's not the video that I Wanted but the video we're gonna get I Will not skip on a video on a Sunday Regardless regardless So we're not going to let any type of Disaster go to waste The property's underwater and I can't
Get to it only this one third of it so Here we are Now the two types of compasses that are In use there's two major types of Several others but there's two major Types one is a base plate compass And one is a lensetic compass Just by looking at them they're Different I prefer Suunto mc2 base play Compass over a military commander even Though I was trained with this because I Found that over the years a bass play Compass you can do a lot more things and It's a lot more forgiving Just by looking at it we have a signal Mirror Commander does not We have a magnifying lens or a sun lens I believe it's five times magnification This one here has a small one right There it's very difficult to start Flyers with that I think the Magnification is like maybe one or two Does it work in California at 100 Degrees yes I've done it When it's 70 degrees in Ohio it won't Work this one right here however does Okay something to think about Moving along here we have an indicator Right here tick mark at the top and the Bottom This one will tell you your Azimuth or Your bearing where you're going the Bottom one the math is done for you it Gives you reverse azimuth you don't get
That on here You have to actually do math every Single time using this one right here Not saying it's wrong it's just extra Steps Let's go and talk about the parts of the Compass real quick brief overview Nothing crazy Signal mirror siding mirror we have a Bezel ring that moves left and right Black indicator lines are on the outside Around the outside we have north south East and west along with these little Black lines those are tick marks every Single tick mark is worth two degrees I Believe a military Commando is worth Three degrees might be wrong on that I Believe it's three these are worth two So every one of those is two degrees Inside we have a red Hollow Arrow I'll refer to things as red in the shed Dog in the dog house All you're going to do is move that red Needle Inside of that Hollow arrow and that Will give you your direction of travel Or Azimuth as indicated on that top tick Mark Bottom we have our sun lens our Magnifying lens And we have our north south Arrow North Is red South is black Red Hollow Arrow Magnetic needle red is north
Black is south Tick marks every tick mark is worth two Degrees Top Mark right there where the N is Tells you your direction Or your azimuth Bottom tick mark tells you reverse Azimuth Using the compass we've already talked About it the main purpose of using a Compass anywhere in the world is to walk A straight line And to avoid lateral drift lateral drift Simply put You are here You need to be here Shortest distance between two points Straight line that's where a compass Comes in play however lateral drift is The veering off In a particular direction Some people have a back injury a leg Injury you might be carrying a heavy Load on your back a rifle slung on your Side something's going to cause you to Veer to One Direction okay we've all Heard of the infamous walking in circles It doesn't mean you're just standing There spinning your wheels doing this it Means you're doing lateral drift over a Long distance That could ultimately bring you back in The area that you started so lateral Drift bad walking the straight line good
Three types of north magnetic north grid North and true north magnetic north Is that red arrow on your compass We're gonna move it until the red needle Is inside of that Hollow needle and that Will give you my direction Whatever degrees I dial at the top on The top tick mark Let's put North up there I know that When I rotate that put that needle Inside the hollow Arrow I know that's North That itself simple Grid North if you're using a map It tells you the bottom which way is North And you would put it in that direction Grindor very simple The indicator on a map we're not using The map so we're not going to worry About it True North the spot on the earth this is Where it gets crazy Round earth Flat Earth Hot dog Earth Where did you choose to believe in There's a magnetic pole and it's proven That throughout history it has moved Every so many degrees every eons of Years okay it's moved they can track That There's a way to make all three of these Jive
Or marry up or work together and that's Called declination but we're not going To go into that because we're not using The map Now all the spelling rumors or concerns Right now Here's a question Do I need declination Which is the difference between grid North and magnetic north mainly using a Map To operate my compass I'm going to say no And I'll take that Pepsi challenge with Anybody any day of the week and here's Why Whatever Azimuth or bearing I shoot It is 55 degrees to that Creek I am going to walk 55 degrees to that Creek you're not going to she's not Going to they're not going to I am Because I'm shooting it does that make Sense now if I have a map in front of me And the declination says eight degrees I now have to adjust my compass To match that eight degree difference on A map To make sure I go directly to the creek That's on that map does that make sense No map No declination why because you are Shooting it Let's move on
Looking at our compass We have a tick mark at the top of our Bezel ring And one at the bottom We touched on this earlier Think of Back to the Future the top one Tells me where I'm going my azimuth The bottom one tells me where I was okay It's a reverse Azimuth the math is Already done for you in this Compass Right here so all we got to do Is whatever number or degrees that we Spin are bezel ring to in place Underneath that tick mark That's the degrees that I want to go Let's spin this one to 120 degrees Boom 120 is right underneath That tick mark and remember every tick Mark is worth two degrees North Is always zero degrees south Is a hundred and eighty Degrees As we look at it North East South and West So East is going to be 90 degrees And west 270. Let's go and put all this together right Now let's pick one of these known Degrees
Let's go do East That means I'm going to spin my what Bezel ring To where East is directly underneath Arctic mark East or 90 degrees Done now all we have to do Hold our Compass as flat as possible Finger and thumb on the back of my base Plate and I'm going to rotate my body With the compass Not the compass I'm gonna rotate my body With the compass Until the red arrow Lands directly inside of the hollow Arrow Meaning this right here Red portion Black portion Like I already said fingertip and thumb I'm going to place the compass around my Navel area I'm going to look straight Down and I'm going to do what rotate my Body with the compass Until that red portion of that needle Lands directly Inside the hollow red arrow and I know Now I'm facing 90 degrees or due east Now let's talk about the bottom tick Mark to get our back Azimuth or our Reverse Azimuth no math needed the tick Mark does that for you Hypothetical
Let's rotate our bezel ring and put North Under the top tick mark And North is what zero degrees Looking down bottom tick mark says South And guess what that is 180 degrees So I know to get home all I gotta do Stand up Finger and thumb Around my navel area rotate my body with The compass put that red portion into The hollow portion and I should be Facing south 180 degrees so now I can walk home Very simple That's why I love these two mc2s the Math is all done for you it's basically Idiot proof If you can read you're good to go you Can't read This picture So Give it a take you know I'm a dumb grunt and I don't know Anything so Now if you're using a compass that does Not have A bottom tick mark Such as the military Commandos There's a quick way to find it It's an acronym called lambs L-a-m-s and acronym is a word and every Letter is a word so it's catchy and it's An easy way to remember something
L is less than 180 degrees If you shoot your Azimuth and it is less Than 180 degrees You're simply going to Add 180 degrees Case in point we went North zero degrees This sounds like a Kid's door of the Explorer program is North zero degrees more or less than 180 degrees Well zero is what less than 180 degrees So we're going to add 180 degrees and Golly G South is exactly 180 degrees Now flip side if our Azimuth or Direction of travel is more than 180 Degrees We're subtracting 180 degrees So if we're gonna go 360 degrees Is that more or less than 180 it's more So we're going to subtract 18 degrees so You can do the math yourself to double Check But again as soon to mc2 is already done For you Now we're going to cite with our compass For me think of it as you're on the Pistol range I'm going to take my feet Open them up shoulder width apart and be Comfortable I'm going to position my arms at a full Presentation fully extended keeping that Compass level I'm going to bring it to My eye I'm not bringing my head down to The compass I'm going to bring it up to Eye level keeping it as level as
Possible From here we're going to cite I'm going To tilt that mirror until I can see This portion and that red Hollow arrow With my needle inside of it in that Mirror reflected back to me Once I can see it Now I know I'm still in the direction of Travel We're going to look down at this window Right here And there should be a v-notch Keeping that red portion inside of my Hollow Arrow I'm going to Simply use my Dominant eye and look into that e notch I see a rock a tree or something that's Inside that v-notch I know now I can walk to that object in A straight line that I created using my Compass So now tying it all together you see Those three trees right there that one Tree with three trunks on it we're gonna Go ahead and shoot an Azimuth to that Center trunk Keeping the compass level I'm going to Rotate that mirror until I can see the Full View Now I will rotate the bezel ring And put that magnetic Arrow inside That Hollow Arrow And I know I can now walk To that tree in The Distance by looking Into that v-notch in that oval window
In a straight line Like I said easy peasy lemon squeezy you Have two choices with the compass the Main purpose is to walk a straight line If I know the degrees I simply dial in My degrees Rotate my body with the compass Get that red arrow inside the hollow Arrow get comfortable Shoulder width apart full presentation Tilt that mirror until I can see pick up A clock on the wall the clocks don't sit Like this I sit vertically on the wall Now I can move left or right keep that Red needle inside the hollow Arrow Bring it to my eye Sight in And walk that straight line Option two I have no idea what degrees I Want to walk but I see that rock out There way out in the distance How do I figure that out Same thing Look through my sliding mirror Into that v-notch put it directly on That rock or tree or wherever I want to Go Tilt the mirror Rotate The bezel ring until the red magnetic Portion is lined up exactly inside the Hollow Arrow Keeping that object in that v-notch Then I can go oh that's Rock right there
Is due east I know I'm gonna head Deweys to that Rock So simple and stupid But that in a nutshell is Basic Land Navigation where you're just gonna walk From point A to B On an Azimuth once you're there Reverse Azimuth all you got to do Dial that number to the top Do the exact same steps Full presentation Site in and I'll walk directly back to My vehicle Walking a straight line You're never going to get lost And that right there is about as basic As it's going to get there are several Other factors one is a pace count Which is nothing more than keeping track Of distance as you walk every 100 meters Or yards whichever one you prefer you Pick up a rock small pebble put in your Pocket break a twig off of a branch make A notch on a stick that way you can tell How far you've been walking that day Let's say I walk on this straight line To go up On a quick Scout I want to go straight Line distance I'm up at 1600 meters well When I do my reverse Azimuth to walk Back to my truck I might want to count to make sure I end up at 1600 meters and my truck is
Right there I didn't do lateral drift And I hit 1600 meters and I go Where's my truck at Simple That's a different video Now the other thing is a waypoint If for example I need to be here I start here Somewhere in this area here I want to Check out this Creek that runs through The property I make it to here and I want to go out This direction and Scout around Scout Over here I want to do something that's Called a waypoint throw up something Bright colored like a bright orange Shimog or a t-shirt hang it from a tree At eye level Then I can walk either direction as far As I want as long as I turn around and I See that bright orange I can walk right Back where I started Pick up my compass Shoot my Azimuth again And continue That straight line So these are all future classes that we Can give like I said today's compromise Most of my property is underwater So I thought I'd do something different Something cool camp out in the cabin in The swamp when it's actually a swamp and Give you a quick Hip Pocket class
